I've Never Fried Fresh Fish! That’s Okay
What would you think if your friend told you they’ve never fried fresh fish in their life? Would you assume they’re lazy, or would you pause and want to hear their story? Funny, right? As a woman, I’m very aware of how cooking is often linked to traditional gender roles, especially the idea that women are supposed to cook for their families. But here’s the truth: I’ve never fried fresh fish. Yep, not once. And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one out of billions of people who hasn’t!
Don’t get me wrong, I love seafood. In fact, I’d choose fish over chicken or beef any day. My mom cooks fish often at home, and I enjoy every bite. But somehow, despite all that, I’ve just never gotten around to frying fresh fish myself. It’s not because I’m lazy, I’ve helped my mom clean fish and I’ve fried chicken and other meats plenty of times. But frying fish? That’s still sitting on my “someday I’ll try this” list.
It’s kind of funny when I think about it. I always tell myself, “One day, I’ll finally do it.” And maybe it’s something mental, like, if I love seafood so much, shouldn’t I at least know how to cook it? After all, the best meals are made in our own kitchens. Maybe some of you reading this feel the same way?
Whenever I buy seafood at restaurants or from food vendors, I can’t help but ask myself: why haven’t I just tried cooking it myself? If you already have that skill, that’s amazing, be proud! As for me, I’m still figuring it out. Fun fact: my mom isn’t exactly a seafood expert either, so I guess I get it from her. We’re both still learning.
We even have a fish pond at home, and my mom has cooked fish from it before. But here’s the dilemma, I feel kind of guilty eating them. I love feeding the fish and watching them swim around. So when it’s time to turn one into a meal, I hesitate. It’s a strange feeling, loving seafood but also not wanting to hurt the creatures you care for. Maybe that’s part of why I’ve never taken that step.
So yeah, I’ve never fried fresh fish, and that’s okay. It doesn’t make me any less capable in the kitchen. I know I’ll get there eventually. For now, it’s just part of my story.
