What comes to your mind when someone says they’re picky about food?
Or have you ever hung out with friends who take forever to decide what to eat? Maybe you’ve experienced that, or maybe you didn’t even notice your friend was super picky. If you’ve ever been with someone who’s really selective about food, I bet you’ve thought, “Wow, that’s a lot of work!”
Well, I’m definitely picky about food. I won’t eat something I don’t like, and I avoid it completely if it doesn’t feel right for me. I’m not talking about people who are vegan, vegetarian, or follow a specific diet. I mean those who technically can eat anything but choose to avoid some foods for personal reasons. For me, being picky means paying close attention to what’s in my food. For example, I avoid sticky rice, oily foods, or anything loaded with MSG (Monosodium Glutamate).
One big reason is that I have a sensitive throat, actually, even more sensitive than my heart, haha! If I eat deep-fried food, I can only handle two or three pieces before it bothers me. It’s kind of a blessing in disguise because my body tells me what’s not good. While many people in Indonesia love “gorengan” (fried snacks), I just can’t enjoy them. Even one piece can make my throat act up.
Who doesn’t love snacks, right? But if they have MSG, I can’t eat too many at once. Otherwise, my throat will be unhappy the next morning. It’s a real dilemma! But that’s just how it is for me. The funny part? Even with foods I do like, I can still be picky. Like pizza, many people think it’s amazing, but I just don’t like it. No clue why, it just doesn’t feel right. And sauces? I’m not big on most of them, except for my instant noodles. Mayonnaise or sambal, now that’s more my style.
Being picky doesn’t mean I don’t try new things. Actually, I love trying new foods! If I taste something for the first time and don’t like it, I just don’t go back for seconds.
So, here’s my perspective, and just so you know, here’s a list of foods I’m especially picky about:
- Snacks with too much MSG
- Oily foods (deep-fried)
- Sticky rice
- Pizza
- Mustard greens
- Soda and packaged drinks
